Classic Mixtape Run: Dom Kennedy - From The Westside With Love

Released in 2010, “From the Westside with Love” is widely regarded as Dom Kennedy’s breakthrough project. This mixtape is often seen as a pivotal moment in preserving the West Coast’s underground identity. As the region grappled with finding a new sound, “From the Westside with Love” offered a curated experience, capturing the essence of Leimert Park and South Central. Unlike typical 90’s gangsta rap, Dom’s flow was more conversational and less boastful. The mixtape delves into everyday experiences, such as checking your bank account, meeting a girl at a party, and driving around Crenshaw. It exudes a warm, analog feel, blending jazz, soul, and g-funk seamlessly. One of the first rap artists to embrace streetwear brands like Stüssy, Supreme, and Crooks & Castles, Dom presents a lyrical time capsule of the fashion scene during that era. The mixtape encourages listeners to roll down the windows and let the city hear their music. Songs like “1997” evoke nostalgia, featuring a Gap Band sample and offering a glimpse into Dom’s childhood. “Locals Only” pays homage to the people from his hometown. “The 4 Heartbeats,” featuring Overdose, showcases Dom’s exceptional storytelling, weaving a narrative about relationships over a soulful, bouncy beat. “Choose Up” taps into Dom’s smooth, confident, and effortless “playa” persona. The production of “From the Westside with Love” was handled by The Polyseeds, Roach Gigz, and Chuck Inglish. This mixtape played a significant role in the “Post-Hyphy/New West” movement, bridging the gap between legendary figures like Snoop Dogg and the new generation of artists like Kendrick Lamar. It demonstrated that a rapper like Dom Kennedy could achieve global recognition through blog sites without signing a major label deal. With our new series, Class Mixtape Run, we are here to bring that feel back like it was 2010 all over again!
