Elmatic, a track-by-track tribute and reimagining of Nas’s 1994 masterpiece Illmatic, was released in 2011. Widely regarded as one of the greatest mixtapes in hip-hop history, Elmatic is celebrated for its ambitious vision and exceptional execution. Collaborating with Will Sessions, El recreated and expanded upon the iconic production of the original, incorporating live instruments to create a rich and vibrant sound. While maintaining the structure of Illmatic, Elzhi rewrote the lyrics to reflect his own life and the city of Detroit. This project showcases his intricate multi-syllabic rhyme schemes and wordplay, often mirroring Nas’s original rhythmic cadences while adding his own unique twist. Tracks like “Detroit State of Mind” deliver a gritty and descriptive anthem that adapts the original’s energy to the landscape of Detroit. Featuring Royce da 5’9” and Stokley Williams, El flips Nas’ “Life’s a Bitch” to perfection. With live piano work from Detroit legend Amp Fiddler, “The World Is Yours” is recognized for its rich musicality. “Memory Lane” offers a nostalgic journey through Elzhi’s childhood connections and the history of the Detroit rap scene, further demonstrating his ability to reinterpret the original from his perspective. Originally suggested by DJ House Shoes, this mixtape served as a landmark solo moment for Elzhi following his departure from Slum Village. What truly sets Elmatic apart is the live band element and Elzhi’s elite lyricism. With our new series, Class Mixtape Run, we are here to bring that feel back like it was 2006 all over again!
