Classic Mixtape Run: Curren$y - Covert Coup

Produced entirely by The Alchemist, Covert Coup, considered the pinnacle of Curren$y mixtapes, dropped on April 20th, 2011. It marked a cultural shift in underground Hip-Hop, evolving into a more album-like experience. This was likely the first rapper-producer collaboration mixtape ever assembled. Unlike Spitta’s usual jazz-infused sound, Covert Coup embraced a dark, psychedelic, and gritty aesthetic. Following his recent signing with Warner Bros. Records, the imagery of the infamous fallen Joseph Stalin statue conveyed his intent to dismantle any preconceived notions about him. Despite its brevity, spanning only 28 minutes across 10 tracks, the mixtape was concise and impactful, introducing us to a captivating verse from the upcoming rapper Freddie Gibbs on the menacing track “Scottie Pippens.” Tracks like “Smoke Break” and “The Type,” featuring Prodigy, solidified Covert Coup’s status as a classic. With our new series, Class Mixtape Run, we are here to bring that feel back like it was 2011 all over again!
