Cold Day in Hell, presented by LRG (Lifted Research Group) Clothing and released on Halloween in 2011, transformed Freddie Gibbs from an underground rapper with a following on the blogs into a significant force in the revamp of “gangsta rap.” Despite being a free mixtape, it boasted the quality of a major studio album, mixed, mastered, and sequenced with precision. Although Gibbs had already signed to Young Jeezy’s CTE World imprint, the mixtape didn’t significantly enhance his career. However, it did further highlight his “gritty yet polished” aesthetic. The mixtape seamlessly blended soulful, Midwest-style rap with heavy, dark Southern trap, a testament to the talented producers he collaborated with. Big K.R.I.T. produced “Rob Me a Nigga,” Cardo contributed “B.A.N.ned,” “My Homeboy’s Girlfriend,” and “Menace II Society,” J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League crafted “187 Proof” and “Barely M.A.D.E. It,” and DJ Burn One delivered “Natural High.” Unlike many rappers who focus solely on street life, Gibbs offered a psychological profile of the streets. Take “My Homeboy’s Girlfriend,” for instance, an affair with an incarcerated friend’s partner, to truly grasp his unique perspective. Despite featuring rap superstars like Young Jeezy, 2 Chainz, and Juicy J, Gibbs showcased his versatility, impeccable production sense, honest depictions of the streets, and his signature raw aggression, proving that could rap with the best of them. With our new series, Class Mixtape Run, we are here to bring that feel back like it was 2011 all over again! On behalf of Live Mixtapes listen to it below!
