A Plain Pat and Emile Production mixtape, released on July 17, 2008, in collaboration with streetwear brand 10 Deep and Fool’s Gold Records, was a defining moment in the music industry for Cudi. It caught Kanye West’s attention and propelled emo rap to the forefront. This free download was accompanied by a limited edition 10 Deep x Kid Cudi “A Kid Named Cudi” t-shirt, which has since become a highly sought-after collector’s item. The mixtape featured classic tracks like “The Prayer,” widely regarded as a fan favorite, and “Day ’n’ Nite,” which achieved a remarkable #3 ranking on the Billboard Hot 100, marking his breakout hit. “Cleveland is the Reason,” produced by Dot Da Genuis, paid homage to his upbringing. “Man on the Moon” introduced his Space Man persona, while “50 Ways to Make a Record” delved into the challenges, pressures, and creative process of making it in the music industry. Cudi seamlessly blended hip-hop with indie rock, electronica, and alternative, addressing themes of depression, loneliness, and drug use. This groundbreaking approach was considered revolutionary at a time when hip-hop was often perceived as having a tough exterior. The mixtape served as a precursor to his debut album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day (2009). With our new series, Class Mixtape Run, we are here to bring that feel back like it was 2008 all over again! On behalf of LiveMixtapes, listen to it below!
