Classic Mixtape Run: Lil' Flip - Houston... Is Mine

Houston… Is Mine, released in 2005, was a collaboration between Lil Flip, DJ Big Mike, and Evil Empire. It was originally streamed and downloaded on MixUnit.com. Flip, known for his massive success with his double-platinum album U Gotta Feel Me in 2004, showcased his dominance in Houston’s rap scene. While often associated with New York’s elite, this tape demonstrated Flip’s ability to dominate outside Texas. It served as a bridge between his earlier works, mixtapes, freestyles, and major label success, allowing him to release grittier and less radio-friendly tracks. Flip paid homage to Screwed Up Click and enlisted his Clover G comrades to participate in the project. This was a direct response to the intense competition in Houston from artists like Mike Jones, Paul Wall, Slim Thug, and Chamillionaire, asserting his claim to the city’s rap scene. Flip, the first artist to release an album (The Leprechaun in 2000) and the first to receive a personal co-sign from DJ Screw, wanted to prove to Swishahouse that he still had it. From the freestyles to the Clover G anthems and the diss/sub tracks, Flip was determined to retain his crown. With our new series, Class Mixtape Run, we are here to bring that feel back like it was 2005 all over again! On behalf of Youtube, listen to it below!
