Slauson Boy Vol. 1, released in 2005, served as the raw and unfiltered introduction to Nipsey Hussle’s career. It quickly became a local street classic throughout South-Central Los Angeles. At just 20 years old, Hussle, representing the heart of his neighborhood Slauson Ave, planted a flag and solidified his lifelong commitment to representing and investing in the area that nurtured him. This unpolished project from a young Nipsey was gritty, high-energy, and heavily influenced by 90’s and 2000’s West Coast gangsta rap. His deliberate and methodical flow captivated listeners, as he wove tales of growing up in a heavily gang-related environment. Songs like “Slauson Boy” and “Roll the Windows Up” were like mission statements and glimpses of the flow and style that would later become synonymous with his later mixtapes. Even back then, Hussle’s entrepreneurial spirit and desire for independence were evident, as he sold copies out of his trunk.
