Classic Mixtape Run: Larry June - Out the Trunk

Released in September 2019, at a crucial juncture in Larry June’s career after parting ways with Warner Records, the album’s title pays homage to the quintessential Bay Area hustle and serves as the blueprint for his “lifestyle rap” persona. Comprising only 10 tracks, this project boasts what is arguably Larry’s most renowned song, “Smoothies in 1991,” produced by Julian Avila. This track became the manifesto for his brand, encapsulating deep lines about financial discipline, organic eating, and avoiding unnecessary distractions. It transformed the “Good Job, Larry” ad-lib from a mere catchphrase into a widespread movement. Notably, Larry June famously sold 1000 physical units of his music independently to demonstrate his self-sufficiency and independence from a record label. His approach is often referred to as “Lifestyle Rap.” Throughout the album, he frequently references organic smoothies, tending to plants, driving classic cars (particularly Porsches), and emphasizing financial literacy. This man has made the orange emoji 🍊 an iconic symbol of his independent brand. With our new series, Class Mixtape Run, we are here to bring that feel back like it was 2019 all over again!
